Google Quantum Computer Supremacy?

Google Quantum Computer Supremacy?

Skip to:

Google’s Quantum computer “Sycamore” (Quantum Processor) might have achieved to perform a task which is only possible for a Quantum Computer to complete.

The paper published on the NASA website titled “Quantum supremacy using a programmable superconducting processor.” talks about the recent experiment performed by the Google quantum computer.

Unfortunately, the paper was taken down from the website but some websites managed to download it. It is being said that the paper still needs to be reviewed by the peers and other scientists to confirm the work performed by NASA and Google.

What was in the Paper “Quantum supremacy using a programmable superconducting processor “?

In 2018 google published a paper titled “Characterizing Quantum Supremacy in Near-Term Devices” which talked about was really required to achieve ” Quantum Supremacy”.

In 2019 the paper titled “Quantum supremacy using a programmable superconducting processor” talks about the successful experimentation and tasks performed by the Google computer which achieves ” Quantum Supremacy “

The paper focuses on the problem -” A fundamental challenge is to build a high-fidelity processor capable of running quantum algorithms in an exponentially large computational space.”

Further, the paper talks about the “using a processor with programmable
superconducting qubits to create quantum states on 53 qubits, occupying a state space 253 ∼ 1016

After repetitive experiments were done on the quantum computer the paper concludes that the task which a supercomputer can perform in 10000 years was done in just 200 seconds( 3 min 20 sec) by Quantum Computer. If this is true, Google has indeed achieved supremacy in the world of computing.

Jim Clarke, director of quantum hardware, Intel Labs said:

Google’s recent update on the achievement of quantum supremacy is a notable mile marker as we continue to advance the potential of quantum computing. Achieving a commercially viable quantum computer will require advancements across a number of pillars of the technology stack. We along with the industry are working to quickly advance all of those areas to realize the true potential of quantum computing. And while development is still at mile one of this the marathon, we strongly believe in the potential of this technology.

Google’s Quantum Computer

The Controversy Started Right after..

IBM’s head of research “Dario Gil ” in talks with FT denies Google claim on “Quantum Supremacy” he says “Google’s Quantum computer is well-setup hardware which is specialized to perform a single task.”

IBM is a strong competitor of Google and has been building its own Quantum computer Q System One. IBM has successfully achieved to make quantum computer more reliable than the previous Quantum Machines but yet it is far from making it a practically usable machine.
